How we got here.
Great Plains Federal Credit Union began in June 1950 outside Pittsburg, Kansas, at the Jayhawk Plant — chartered as Spencer Chemical Employees Federal Credit Union to serve workers at Spencer Chemical Company. When Gulf Oil bought Spencer in 1966, we became Gulf Chemical Employees FCU.
The 1980s brought the change that would shape who we are today. We acquired Tip Top Credit Union of Hillsboro in 1985 and renamed ourselves Great Plains, since we no longer served just one employee group. Bell Telephone Employees CU of Salina followed in 1989, Montezuma Credit Union in 1993, and Communities United Credit Union of Wichita in 2007. Each merger added a community we still serve.
Our headquarters moved to Joplin, Missouri in December 1996 — closer to the centre of the membership and the heart of the territory we cover.
Through every name change and every merger, the philosophy stayed the same: not for profit, not for charity, but for service. Today, eleven branches across Kansas and Missouri serve members and their families — owned by them, governed by them, built around the moments that matter most.
